The Fisher House Foundation provides free lodging to family members of servicemen and women being treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center including many wounded warriors. It enables family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times – during the hospitalization for an illness, disease, or injury.
Ongoing monthly meals are provided for wounded personnel’s families staying at Fisher House. Oakleaf DC and the Navy Dental Officers’ and Spouses’ Club (NDOSC) prepare one meal a month for the families who are staying at the Fisher House Complex. This is a wonderful way to get involved and help fellow military families feel at home while their loved one is in the hospital.
- Once a month members of Oakleaf and NDOSC sign-up and bring in individual dishes to serve 10 people at the Fisher Houses at WRNMMC. This will often be the only home-cooked meal Fisher House residents will get during their time on base.
- The Oakleaf benevolence fund and Oakleaf item specific drives provide specifically requested items. New appliances, toy boxes, pantry items and miscellaneous supplies have been provided for the Fisher Houses.
- The families that stay at Fisher House are selected because their loved ones are the most ill of the patient population at WRNMMC. Sometimes the patients do not qualify as “wounded warriors” but are still in a low-income or reservist status and extremely ill or dying.
